Halal: booming business

AMSTERDAM - A new report by Euromonitor predict that in 2030 muslims will make up one-quarter of the world’s population. China will have a key role in feeding them, but the growth in demand for halal meat will also benefit the Netherlands. The Chamber of Commerce in Dubai already indicated that the market for halal meat will have a 1.6 billion turnover in 2018.

Halal food labels are found on meat from animals slaughtered according to islamic laws. Various organisations are involved in the approval of meat classified as halal. The halal meat products are recognized by their labeling.

It is remarkable that China is emerging as one of the biggest producers of halal meat, considering only 2% of the population is muslim. However, the country is closely involved in the formulation of trade agreements and regional partnerships to find new markets for their products. Another example of China leading the way for halal is the creation of various new trade shows and conferences, like the Sino-Malaysian Halal Food, Supplies Certification and Industry Cooperation Seminar, held in July.

China is also adjusting its current infrastructure to fit the Halal trade, for example: the creation of the Halal Food and Muslim Supplies Manufacturing Wuzhong Halal Industrial Park; where 218 companies are directly involved.
