Trending in 2018: The 6 Food Trends at this moment

MELBOURNE - The first predictions for the big food trends  have already been published by supermarket chain Waitrose. With some unusual trends in the list, we’re curious to see how many consumers will actually be seduced by these products. Below you’ll find 6 actual food trends.

1. Watermelon water

Watermelon water is the new trend. According to sources, singer Beyoncé has invested in watermelon water brand WTRMLN WTR. This is one of the reasons why experts tip watermelon water as a big new trend. The drink itself is surprisingly easy to make: simply combine watermelon and lemon; and you’re done!

2. Vegetable yogurt

Vegetable yogurt might sound strange, but it’s basically a variation on fruit yogurt. The only difference is that vegetable yogurt contains sweet vegetables, instead of fruit.

3. Hawaiian Poke

First pick the base of your meal: rice, salad or both. The next step is to choose between raw salmon, tuna, chicken, surimi or shrimp. Now you’ve created a Poke, also known as a variation on sushi. This salad is already very popular in California and even in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, you can find a salad bar named ‘Pokébowl’.

4. Perfumed cocktails

A very unusual trend. You simply let the bartender know what your favorite scent is, and he will incorporate the taste it in your cocktail. Waitrose’s food watchers have labelled it one of the big trends for this year.

5. Replacing carbohydrates by eggplant

Eggplant is rising in popularity as a healthy replacement of carbohydrates in products such as bread, pasta and crisps.

6. Eating very unhealthy from time to time...

Having an unhealthy diet has been frowned upon for years, but this year might bring some naughty changes to our eating habits. According to supermarket chain Waitrose, we are more likely to snack on some very unhealthy products once in awhile. It predicts that the sales of ‘unhealthy’ products will be on the rise for the first time in years.
