Private Label developments in the international food business

AMSTERDAM - On May 16th and 17th the annual Private Label exhibition PLMA took place in Amsterdam. Like every year, all exhibition halls of the RAI were full with more than 2,500 private label manufacturers who presented their private label concepts and in some cases also their branded products. Many food and beverages producers were there, but also nonfood categories like health & beauty, household & kitchen and personal & leisure were present. Although there were some complaints about the entry fee (with 225 euro one of the most expensive exhibitions in the world in this segment) and about the way the exhibitors are spread out over all halls (apart from food versus non-food no category grouping for example) like every year the PLMA was well visited. In short, it is a complete and qualitative exhibition where many interesting relationships are built and maintained and where business deals are being set up between retailers and manufacturers.

This is not very surprisingly if you look at the growing market for PL. Within the food segment we see that Europe is taking the lead with PL developments, with the UK as most dominant player. But also in other markets it is an interesting growth segment. The upcoming discounters like Lidl and Aldi are of course supporting this trend heavily, but also in the premium segment PL is gaining popularity.  There is a demand for more information about PL as was also visible in a regional initiative of food companies from the Dutch province of Brabant called Holland Food Camp. With the support of the Province of Brabant a collective Brabant pavilion could be organized at the PLMA. For visitors, a special Food Tour was organized along all regional companies from Brabant who had a booth at the PLMA. In a next Agrifood Export Meeting the upcoming PL trends will be thoroughly discussed. PL specialist Koen de Jong will share his knowledge and opinion with the participants and TEN the export network will lead the discussion. If you are interested, you can still sign in!
